How To Install Rain Guards

Updated on Sep 4, 2025

Whether you call them rain guards, side window deflectors, or vent visors, these simple accessories offer significant benefits. Designed to let fresh air in while keeping rain, wind, and debris out, rain guards are a must-have addition for any driver who likes cruising with the windows cracked—regardless of the weather.

Rain guards don’t just improve comfort—they can also enhance your vehicle’s look and help reduce condensation and fogging of the interior windows. Installation is typically quick and easy, even if you're not a seasoned DIYer.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the installation process of both popular rain guard styles, including tape-on and in-channel. Read on to learn tips, tricks, and a step-by-step walkthrough of how to install rain guards, no matter which style you choose.

What Are Rain Guards?

Rain guards are slim, aerodynamic accessories that install just above your vehicle’s side windows. They’re designed to deflect rain, wind, and road debris away from open windows, so you can enjoy fresh air without dealing with moisture intrusion or wind noise.

These deflectors also help reduce fogging by improving airflow and can even reduce sun glare for a more comfortable driving experience. Whether you're stuck in a sudden downpour or want to leave your windows cracked on a hot day, rain guards let you do it with confidence.

In-Channel Vs. Stick-On Rain Guards: Pros and Cons

Rain guards come in two key styles—in-channel and stick-on. While both serve the same general purpose, they offer different installation methods and aesthetics.

In-channel rain guards slide directly into the window channel for a sleek appearance. They don’t require adhesive on your vehicle’s paint, making for a clean install. However, they can be a bit trickier to fit correctly.

Tape-on (or stick-on) rain guards mount to the exterior of the door frame using automotive-grade adhesive tape. They’re easier to install and don’t interfere with window operation, making them a popular choice for first-time DIYers.

How to Install In-Channel Rain Guards

How to Install In-Channel Rain Guards

Let’s start with in-channel rain guards. While they offer a sleek, flush-mounted appearance, proper installation is key to ensuring they stay secure and don’t interfere with your window operation. Follow these steps for a smooth, successful install:

Step 1: Unbox the Product and Read the Instructions Carefully

Before anything else, unpack your rain guards and locate the instruction sheet. While this guide covers general steps, manufacturer directions may include vehicle-specific tips or variations in installation that you’ll want to follow closely.

Step 2: Verify Fitment With a Dry Mock-Up

Before peeling any adhesive or pressing parts into place, do a dry fit. Hold each rain guard up to its corresponding window channel to confirm it’s the right size and shape. This quick check helps avoid frustration later and ensures nothing was damaged or warped during shipping.

Step 3: Prep The Inside of the Window Channels

Use the provided alcohol wipes—or a clean cloth with isopropyl alcohol—to thoroughly clean the inside of the window channels. This step removes dirt, dust, and oils that could prevent the adhesive from bonding properly. Let the area dry completely before moving on.

Step 4: Peel the Adhesive Backing and Insert the Deflector Into the Channel

Carefully peel back the adhesive liner on the rain guard, starting at one end. Insert the deflector into the upper part of the window channel first, then gently work your way along the length of the channel, pressing it into place. Be sure to apply even pressure along the adhesive areas for a solid bond.

Tip: Avoid stretching or forcing the deflector—it should follow the natural curve of the window channel.

Step 5: Roll Up the Windows

Once all rain guards are installed, slowly roll the windows up to help seat the deflectors into the channel. You may feel slight resistance the first time—this is normal. Keep the windows fully closed for at least 24 hours to allow the adhesive to set and the deflectors to form to the channel.

How to Install Stick-On Rain Guards

If you’re looking for a quicker, no-fuss install, tape-on rain guards are a great choice. These deflectors attach directly to the exterior of the door frame using automotive-grade adhesive tape. The first three steps are essentially identical to installing in-channel rain guards, but don’t think that means they’re any less crucial for a clean, long-lasting installation.

Unbox the Product and Read the Instructions Thoroughly

Open up the packaging and lay everything out. Be sure to read through the manufacturer’s instructions before getting started, as some products may include model-specific tips or prep materials.

Verify Fitment with a Dry Fit

Just like with in-channel deflectors, you’ll need to verify the fitment of these deflectors with a dry mock-up. Hold each piece up to its corresponding window frame to ensure proper alignment and sizing before removing any adhesive backing.

Prep the Outside of the Door Frame

Clean the area where the rain guard will be applied using the supplied alcohol wipes or a lint-free cloth with isopropyl alcohol. This step is crucial—any residue or grime can weaken the adhesive bond. Let the surface dry thoroughly before moving on.

Peel the Adhesive Backing and Align with the Window

Carefully peel back a few inches of the adhesive liner on one end of the rain guard, aligning it with the top edge of the window frame. Gradually work your way down the length of the visor, peeling the backing as you go and keeping the alignment straight.

Tip: Go slow—once the adhesive touches the surface, it’ll start to bond quickly.

Press Firmly to Initiate a Strong Bond

Once in place, go back over the entire deflector and press firmly along the length of the tape. Apply steady pressure for 30–60 seconds to help initiate a solid bond. For best results, avoid washing the vehicle or exposing it to heavy moisture for at least 24 hours after installation.
